Patpong
Market
Over the last few years Patpong has become as famous for its night market as
it is for its bars, entertainment and red light district. So much so that it has successfully made itself
a tourist destination suitable for families although we would still not recommend it for all as the bars and
the sex scene is still all there. You can avoid the bar area by sticking to the section on the main Silom and
Surawong Roads.
The market itself attracts thousands of tourists every night. It is well worth a visit to savour the atmosphere
but be aware its not as cheap as other Bangkok markets and you will not find the best bargains in Patpong. Prices
are set at tourist levels and can be up to double what you would pay elsewhere. Bargaining is expected but you will
still pay more than elsewhere even if you get them down by 50%.
The market sets up late in the afternoon and is usually open by sunset, around 18.30.
When visiting the market please use common sense. In the main Bangkok is a very safe city but Patpong is one
place where you need to be very aware. Pickpockets abound so The streets get VERY crowded and pickpockets
abound so keep a tight grip on your wallet and handbag. Violence in the area is however very rare.
Remember, the handicrafts will probably be genuine but many items such as watches, DVDs, designer
clothes etc are counterfeit and (probably) illegal in your own country.
Please add any comments and reviews of the night market in Patpong below.
